April is Kakadu Discovery Month and visitors to the National Park will be able to take advantage of a wide range of immersive experiences to help connect with Kakadu, its environment, its people, its culture and its rich history. Many of the activities are free and there are special accommodation deals at the Crocodile Hotel and Cooinda Lodge.

Kakadu’s Discovery Month will give the local Bininj/Mungguy people a great opportunity to tell their stories and share their unique and special way of life.

Visitors will learn how certain environmental changes, like a flower coming into bloom, indicate the start of a certain season. They will be able to learn how food from the land is found, how it comes into season, and how to taste the produce.

Bininj/Mungguy people and Park Rangers will share with visitors bush food walks, weaving workshops and art demonstrations, along with free guided walks to some of Kakadu’s ‘tourism icons’ such as Ubirr and Nourlangie.

In celebration of ‘modern’ Kakadu and the contribution Paul Hogan’s Crocodile Dundee (which debuted 30 years ago in April 1986) made to opening up Kakadu to the rest of the world, the famous Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel will host a Kakadu film night every Saturday night during April, along with art demonstrations and workshops in its own Aboriginal art gallery.
Visitors will be able to hear Bininj stories and meet the locals at Warradjan Cultural Centre, and nearby Yellow Water Cruises will offer a range of daily tours on Yellow Water Billabong, where people will be able to view a vast array of wildlife: from massive saltwater crocodiles and buffalo to dancing Brolgas and delicate Kingfisher birds. Keen fishing enthusiasts can try their luck catching the mighty Barramundi.
