The first day of April marks the beginning of Bangkerreng season at Kakadu National Park. Bangkerreng season is also known as ‘Knock ‘em down’ storm season.
Nakurl (knock 'em down storms) coming from koyek (the east) flattens Manbedje yirridjdja (the early spear grass). Manbedje duwa (the later spear grass) is now green and growing until barra (the later rains). The vast expanses of floodwater recedes and streams start to run clear. Most plants are fruiting and animals are caring for their young.
This is a beautiful time to visit Kakadu, with the clear air, and warm winds only interspersed with an occasional wind storm.

🌧️ Long before calendars, Kakadu had seasons of its own.
The Bininj/Mungguy people have read this Country for tens of thousands of years - not in two seasons, but in six. Each one named. Each one known. Each one carrying a different kind of beauty.
🪃 Kudjewk brings the monsoon rains and roaring waterfalls.
🪃 Bangkerreng arrives with winds that flatten the spear grass.
🪃 Yekke signals the first cool days and the Taste of Kakadu festival.
🪃 Wurrkeng opens the gorges and the remote tracks.
🪃 Kurrung fills the billabongs with birds.
🪃 And Kunumeleng - the build-up - is a time to reflect, and to watch the sky gather for what comes next.
Six seasons. One extraordinary place.
