A seasoned fisho has snagged the latest $10,000 barra on the first day of his fishing trip to a spot that’s proven a winner in the past.

Yellow Water in Kakadu delivered again for local fisherman Jamie Poniris, who caught the 15th winner of Million Dollar Fish Season 10.

This marks Jamie’s second $10,000 red-tagged barra – he previously caught his first in Season 6, also at Yellow Water.

Mr Poniris was fishing with his partner Loren Hanton, who also caught a $10K barra last season, when he caught the 64cm beauty about 9.30pm.

The catch came just in time – the subsequent days of the fishing trip were heavily rain-impacted.

Mr Poniris said he would taxidermy the fish and hang it up next to his Season 6 catch.

“We planned a week-long trip to fish Kakadu, that’s our favourite place to go,” he said.

Cooinda Lodge has to be one of our favourite places to go together as sort of like a fishing holiday, except it’s not so much a holiday, because we go to work when we’re there, we fish hard.

“We intended to fish all the billabongs of Kakadu, not just Yellow Water, but we started at Yellow Water, and on the first day, I got the tagged fish within the first hour and a half.

“After we got it in the first hour and a half, it changed the tone of our fishing trip, we were already victorious, so it had a relaxed feel about it after that.”

There are now 84 barra with $10,000 red tags and 10 fish sporting a million-dollar tag.

Once one of the big ones is caught, all million-dollar tagged fish revert to $10,000 fish until the end of the season.

As the official charity partner, Cancer Council NT receives $1000 for every $10,000 tagged fish caught, bringing the total contribution to the charity to $15,000 so far.

NT Major Events Company acting chief executive Trevor Cox said there’s still plenty of time to get involved and catch a winner.

“With four months left in the season, there’s plenty of time for interstate fishos to travel to the Territory and book their fishing trip of a lifetime,” he said.

“We’re looking forward to seeing more lucky fishos like Jamie reel in a red-tagged barramundi.”
