Best time to cruise
Operating daily, year-round!
Yellow Water Cruises run daily throughout the year (except Christmas Day), and each season offers a different perspective of the floodplain, guided by the six Bininj seasons.
Six Bininj Seasons
During Kudjewk (Jan-Mar) and Bangkerreng (Apr) which are the monsoon and storm seasons, rising waters spread across the floodplain, bringing lush growth, lotus flowers and an explosion of birdlife as animals disperse through the wetlands
As the water recedes through Yekke (May-Jun) and Wurrkeng (Jul-Aug), wildlife becomes easier to spot, with magpie geese, egrets and crocodiles gathering along the billabongs and channels. In the drier Kurrung (Sep-Oct) months, the floodplain is clear and open, offering excellent visibility and consistent wildlife sightings.
Special Annual Events
Kakadu Bird Week in late September celebrates peak bird activity with expert-led sightings, while the Taste of Kakadu Festival often features a special canapé cruise, showcasing native ingredients and bush foods onboard — a unique way to experience Yellow Water through culture, cuisine and Country.
Time of Day
The time of day also changes the experience: early morning cruises are cool and atmospheric, with mist rising from the water as birds call and crocodiles warm themselves, while midday cruises are hot, bright and colourful, with reptiles basking and vivid reflections across the wetlands. Most popular times are early morning and late afternoon, as temperatures are comfortable to sit and enjoy the action.
Important (Dec–Mar): Temperatures can be extreme. We strongly recommend an early morning cruise for children, pregnant guests, and anyone sensitive to heat.

Accessibility Information
Guests requiring wheelchair accessibility should notify our team at reservations@yellowwater.com.au prior to their tour.
Guests using a wheelchair will need to self-drive to the Yellow Water dock for boarding. A designated wheelchair-accessible parking space is available just beyond the bus drop-off point.
For accessibility and safety, wheelchairs are positioned at the front of the boat, where shade may be limited. While our standard procedure is to reserve the front seats for the booked party, guests may choose to transfer to a regular boat seat if they are comfortable doing so. Their wheelchair can then be folded and safely left on the dock or boat, depending on their preference.
Please note that the onboard toilets have limited accessibility, and there are no toilet facilities at the Yellow Water dock.
Motorised wheelchairs cannot be accommodated on our boats due to their size and weight. Guests requiring a motorised wheelchair are encouraged to use a standard wheelchair available from the Cooinda Lodge office.
