Visit Local Indigenous Community and Discover Bininj Culture
Operating Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays — May to October
Australia is home to the oldest living culture on Earth, and in Kakadu, that culture is vibrant and thriving. This tour provides a unique chance to connect with the Bininj Mungguy people, experience traditional weaving, bush tucker preparation, and other cultural practices, and gain a genuine understanding of their enduring connection to Country. Opportunities like this—raw, authentic, and deeply connected to the land—are few and far between in Australia, and even the world.
Take a guided walking tour of the billabong and local community, and discover the history, stories, and traditions of the Murumburr clan families. Learn firsthand about their connection to the land, their country, and the cultural heritage they continue to protect and share.
Try your hand at traditional weaving using locally collected dried Pandanus plants, dyed with natural colours, or explore Indigenous painting techniques and methods passed down through generations. Experience hands-on cultural practices that connect you to the land and the artistry of the Murumburr people.
Sample our traditional foods, carefully prepared using seasonal ingredients. The dishes you taste will vary depending on the time of year and what is abundant in the land and waterways, offering an insight into the flavours and food sources of the region.
Meet at the Cooinda Lodge bus stop at 3:10 pm, directly opposite reception.
Note: We are unable to hold this tour back for late arrivals and there is no possibility to self-drive to this unique location.
