Kakadu Bird Week is a great time to see Kakadu at it's best
‘Twitchers’ and lovers of Australia’s outback wildlife are invited to witness some of the world’s most exotic bird life during Kakadu Bird Week from 14 – 21 October, 2015.
Kakadu is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with the majestic landscape providing a home for over one third of Australia’s bird species. ‘Twitchers’ (as birdwatchers are known) will be able to view woodland birds in the tropical savannah, water birds gracing the region’s famed billabongs, and hear the sounds of richly voiced birds ringing across majestic sandstone escarpments.
For the keenest bird spotters, there will be long treks in the sandstone country to search for white-throated grass wrens and other endemic birds. For the beginners, there will be small interactive groups helping to identify different bird species.
Visitors can take part in a range of tours, events and hands-on scientific monitoring surveys, including surveying in areas that are not normally accessible to the public. There will be plenty of fun for all levels of knowledge – from seasoned twitchers to those who can’t tell a falcon from a finch.
Bird Week will allow visitors to uncover the lives, the habitats and the breathtaking range of Kakadu’s feathered residents.
Kakadu Bird Week is expected to attract thousands of visitors from overseas and around Australia, so accommodation is limited. Kakadu Tourism offers the widest selection of accommodation options, including Cooinda Lodge, which is located next to one of the largest bird habitats in Kakadu – Yellow Water Billabong.
Cooinda Lodge is offering a special Stay & Save package, with 20% discount off stays of two nights or longer during Bird Week, with rates starting from $144 per night. Powered camping sites at Cooinda Camping Ground are available from $46 per night. Rates at the famous Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel are available from $179 per night.
Kakadu Tourism also operates Yellow Water Cruises, which provide a year-round opportunity to view Kakadu’s animal life – from graceful eagles through to fearsome saltwater crocodiles. Special cruises will operate throughout Bird Week to showcase Yellow Water’s birdlife at different times of the day.
