As a World Heritage-listed national park spanning nearly 20,000 km², Kakadu is home to countless natural wonders—from waterfalls and swimming holes to escarpments and billabongs. While some of Kakadu’s treasures remain hidden, others are too good to keep secret—Maguk (pronounced ‘cook’) is one of them. A local favourite, this stunning swimming spot is only accessible during the dry season and has earned its reputation as one of Kakadu’s must-visit destinations. Just ask anyone from the Top End—they’ll know it well.

Formerly known as Barramundi Gorge, Maguk is a stunning natural swimming hole, where crystal-clear waters are fed by a tranquil waterfall. Reaching this hidden gem requires a bit of adventure—it's a 14 km journey from Cooinda, including 12 km of off-road driving followed by a 2 km return walk through tropical bushland. The track can be a little rough for those new to four-wheel driving, so if you'd prefer to leave the driving to someone else, Kakadu Adventure Tours offers guided trips to Maguk and other off-road highlights.
A path, marked only by the occasional arrow in the rock, will lead you through “monsoon forest”, over jagged rocks, through the river (which may have crocs in) and along its sandy, sometimes even beach-like banks. National Parks do their best to remove crocodiles every year from Maguk however as a rule you should always exercise caution when entering any waterway in the NT. The hike is considered very easy so anyone with a basic level of fitness will be able to do it.
After a short hike through lush forest, you’ll arrive at Maguk—a hidden oasis where a pristine waterfall cascades into a crystal-clear plunge pool, framed by towering rock walls. Slip into the water and take in the treelined banks, sun-warmed boulders, and shimmering rock faces, all while freshwater fish dart around you. The sandy edges of the gorge make the perfect picnic spot, inviting you to relax and soak up the atmosphere of what can only be described as one of nature’s finest playgrounds.
Maguk is a must see for any visitor to the park and easily done in half day. Make sure that you check the Parks Access Report to ensure the track is open before you set off to explore, pack yourself a lunch, and drink plenty of water throughout the day.
